I have been keeping it under wraps until the boring contracty details were complete. Now that all the I's have been dotted, I am very excited to share that these two of my little fun pieces will be set decor in the upcoming film 'Arthur Newman, Golf Pro' starring Colin Firth & Emily Blunt!

Look for them on the big screen in the bedroom of Colin Firth's fictional son! (Prints are available in my online print store so you can dress your fictional and or nonfictional son's bedroom too.)

I'm praying for a slow close up, but preparing for edit-room floor. However, just the thought of Foxy Firth acting near my art is thrill enough for me...

I've been working my fingers to a nub; totally addicted to creating the first group of illustrations for the 'Gather 'round' project. And don't you love when work doesn't feel like work, but is still challenging enough to really keep you on your toes?!

I'm pretty proud of the illustrations so far, but still a little bees-under-the-skin anxious about what the client will think... Anyhoo, I've completed 8 drafts with just 5 more to go for this portion of the project. Here's a pic of the latest and greatest:

Here is another project that has me learning a ton in the process. I have the honor of illustrating 13 religious scenes for a publisher. It is involving a lot of research about Bible-times (I've been an admirer of religious art but a novice when it comes to all things Bible,) especially details like clothing, hair style, architecture, etc.

It's been really interesting to learn more about that time period.

I'll be posting more of these as I work through them - some might even be updated further and reposted. I hope you enjoy taking this project journey with me.

The holiday shopping season kick-off is always bustling, which explains my online lag.

I have two local live holiday shows going on RIGHT NOW, one @ Lansing Art Gallery, and one @ Grove Street Co-op. These are my last exhibitions until spring, so don't miss out!

In the project hopper there will be lots of new illustration things to peek at very soon.

So right now my world revolves around drawing up a storm and chasing my sassy almost-2 year old! Hopefully I'll be able to fit in a few bites of turkey...

Don't Look Now, There's a Monkey on Your Back... er Front

Over a year ago, I joined a Facebook Group/online community dedicated to preserving the 'Upper Peninsula Snow Monkeys' (that's the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for the non-Michigander). These snow monkeys, much like the leprechaun, big foot or Nessie, are typically only visible to the truest believers.

After joining this group, more specifically called 'Save the Upper Peninsula Snow Monkeys' they held an online t-shirt logo contest.

I entered, I won and today I received my major award: a free-shirt tee-shirt!

You too can join their F.B. group, and contact them directly about buying your own monkey shirt. Because if there is one thing you can never have enough of, it's monkey shirts!

I've always had a love for the mighty rhinoceros. In 5th grade my teacher read Rudyard Kippling's 'Just So Story' to us about a rhino with cake crumbs itching his skin. It always stuck in my brain, and I carried it there right into adult-hood.

When I met my big-beefy husband, he would always make me scratch his back and I told him he was the rhino from that story. It became an inside joke for us and I would get him little rhino-themed gifts from different trips I took. At some point I need to get a print of Albrecht Dürer's

Rhinoceros for our house.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was to be assigned the task of designing Potter Park Zoo's new rhinoceros exhibit signs! And after learning more about the two amazing rhinos who will be living there, I became even more excited.

Welcome to Potter Park Zoo Doppsee and Jello, you have a great big rhino-sized fan in me.

The Giving Tree: A Bar Mitzvah Project

Shel Silverstein is one of my heroes. I adopted his 'Put something silly in the world that ain't been there before' as a personal motto, especially when it comes to creating art.

Isy Mekler, a young man about to turn 13 (and have his Bar Mitzvah,) has also been inspired by Mr. Silverstein. As part of his Bar Mitzvah project he is asking artists to decorate trees that will be sold in support of the charity 'Reach Out and Read.' He also plans to volunteer with Reach Out and Read by reading to Boston-area children in Spanish and English.

Mekler said [of his project] "I am about to turn 13 and this year I have been inspired to give more of myself. I am hoping that this will become contagious."

When Isy emailed, asking if I would be one of the artists for this very cool project, I immediately said yes! Stay tuned for pix of my finished tree. Once I figure out what I want to do with it...

Collector Profile: Angel Wings & Wedding Bells

Chris Wretschko's passion for angels began when she was just a little girl, but she became a serious collector in 1983 when she decided that her very own 'First' Christmas tree would have an angel theme.

Eventually, angels caught on as thee hot gift from family and friends. Over 300 Angel Ornaments later, the angels have leaped from the tree and exploded to all areas of her home and garden. "In fact, I have even been wearing one Angel earring in my left ear every day to watch over and protect me since the mid 1980’s!" says Chris.

When Chris' soul mate (and recent fiance!) Eric was looking for the perfect gift for his angel, he chose a Kate Cosgrove original painting of a plum-toned seraph to hang in her bedroom.

Chris says of her angelic accumulation "By being surrounded by angels, I am being very well taken care of and happy." May the happiness and protection continue and she and her sweetie head down the aisle to wedded bliss!

I just received word that I am one of the lucky Individual Artist Grant recipients from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing!!

This funding is a HUGE blessing as I team up with Lansing Art Gallery (this May-June) for my first major showing of kid-friendly artwork! And I was starting to sweat thinking about the expense of framing and other exhibition costs.

Nerves have kept me from applying for funding in the past... However, with the support/encouragement of my art community: Cathy Babcock, Barb Whitney, Corinn VanWyck and Roy Saper, I faced my fear and it paid off. So mark your calendars, and I hope to see you at this summer's show 'Animal ArtVenture'!

What do pirates like more than buried treasure? ARRRRRT by Kate Cosgrove...

Matthew is a pirate. He's into parrots, eye patches and the occasional skull-n-cross bones... But surprisingly enough, he is also starting quite the art collection.

When asked if I could supply him with a pirate-themed painting for the wall of his pirate ship, I was surprised that he didn't blow my door down with a cannon and just steal it. I was also relieved that he didn't make me walk the plank. Turns out, for a fierce pirate, Matthew is a pretty great guy! And for that Matthew, I thank you...

Portrait of a Lady... and her family

I am not always able to take on family portraits, but some families are way too cute to pass up!

Case in point: Johanna and Ryan celebrated their 5th anniversary this fall. To help celebrate, Laureen and Doug (Johanna's parents) hired me to create a family portrait in their honor.

K8 Art Collector Profile: The Positive Thinkers

It's not been an easy year for Landon and his wife Heather. Personal tragedies have rocked their world, causing them to be in a state of sadness.

"I stumbled upon an article interviewing you in the NOISE. I was curious, so I looked up your blog and from there started looking through your artwork, the entire time with a big smile on my face. With everything going on, it feels very good to be able to forget about everything for a moment and smile," said Landon in an email to me.

I can't think of a greater compliment than that! Except maybe that he then took it a step farther... Landon went right out and visited 2 galleries that sell my art. He then purchased a piece from each (without the blessing of Heather...) ... Fortunately she fell in love with 'Charlie the Turtle,' and all was right with the world.

When I wished them better luck, he said something that struck a chord with me: "My wife and I are raging optimists, despite the tough times we believe good things are close around the corner." Normally my art stories feature people around the world who have acquired my artwork. But this time the person or should I say purrrson is a cat...

Meet 'Rooney,' a kitten recently adopted by a friend of mine in New York. Rooney purrrrchased a piece of my artwork to start his own collection. (Too much?! Well I love puns so deal with it.)

It was no mistake that the piece he chose was a portrait of himself. At least he is a kitten with high self-esteem. And great taste... Thanks Rooney, I bet your art collection will one day be the cat's pajamas!
